Day 22: Went to line up for Wicked tickets at the Apollo Theatre. Got there at 8:30am and was surprised to see two people sleeping at the front of the box office. I was thinking that they must have been real big fans to be sleeping there, until I saw the security guard shoo them away. Then I realised that they were hoboes. But I didn't need to be there so early. I could have shown up at 10am and still have gotten front row tickets. But anyways, after walking around the block few times, I noticed a few people show up around quarter to, so I decided to stay put. Luckily the guard had told me which door was for the box office so I sat there whilst the other losers were waiting at the wrong door. As the doors opened, I was first in, and managed to get the best ticket. Front row, dead centre. All for the low low price of £27.50!!
Once I got my ticket, it was all a matter of wasting the time between then and the show at 7:30pm. Went to the Museum of Natural Museum, whic I found so interesting. It reignited my love for dinosaurs lol. Then went to the Tate Modern, which house contemporary art. I found this ridiculously boring. And some of it, I wouldn't consider art. A pile of paint cans and paintbrushes is not art. Nor is a canvas that is completely blue. Needless to say, I was out of there pretty quickly. There was one interesting exhibit by a Chinese artist, although I'm not really sure if it's art or not. He pretty much just filled a hall with 100 million porcelain sunflower seeds. Impressive to look at, but art? Left there, and went to Shakespeare's Globe theatre. Just checked out the outside, since I didn't wanna pay to go in. Then since I had some time left, and some extra money, I went back to Primark. Decided to buy a suitcase for all my extra goods (also bought another pair of jeans and a thermal shirt). I came to London with just one bag and I'm leaving London with that bag and a suitcase. By this time, it was almost time for the show so I dropped everything off at home and headed out. I have to say that Wicked was amazing!! It was so funny and engaging, and the singing was outstanding. Best song of the night was of Defying Gravity. Definitely better than the Glee version. It was definitely the best way to spend my last night in London.
Day 23: Today. Had to leave the house early since I had to leave when everyone else left since I coulndn't keep the keys. So with 4 hours to kill, I strolled around Hyde Park, went up to Buckingham Palace and just wandered the streets of London one last time. Spent all my remaining pounds on lunch, and then on chocolate snacks, leaving myself with 22 pence in change which I still have. My Eurostar train left London at 12:30pm, and it only 2 hours 20 minutes to reach Paris. It didn't seem to go that fast when I was looking out the window but apparently it can reach speeds of 300km/hr (probably with no one on board though). I hate travelling with a suitcase!! I don't know how people do it. It's so annoying trying to get through barriers at train stations and trying to get on and off peak hour trains with a huge suitcase in tow. Anyways, once I got to Paris, I found my way to Esplanade de le Defense station where I met up with my cousin Marge who gave me the keys and a map to her place, which is pretty much opposite the Louvre. Prime real estate. And that's that. I'm now in her place right now. Had a very filling dinner of pan-seared salmon and salad with champagne - definitely better than having a KFC meal, that's for sure. I've got the sofa bed to sleep on which means I have heaps of space. But yeah, for now, it's 11:30pm, and I'm just blogging, and uploading my many many photos. I should really cut down on the uploading, since I take photos of everything. Oh well, I can't really help myself.
Planning on doing the New Europe Paris tour tomorrow so that should help me get acquainted with the city. I need to remember that I'm in France. I find that I keep forgetting which country I'm in. It really just makes your head spin sometimes. I keep thinking I'm in Spain or Italy, and it always takes a while for me to realised where I actually am. It can be embarrassing, since as I was getting off the train, I was saying "Grazie" to everyone who moved out of the way for me. It was only afterwards that I realised that I was in France, and should have been saying "Merci". Fail. Anyways, I can't believe I'm finally in Paris!! The dream has come true!! Hopefully it's as awesome as I'm imagining it to be, or else I'm gonna be massively disappointed.
HBL signing out from Paris, France. Salut!!
A simple blog detailing the exploits of a solo traveller trying to make the most of his time travelling the globe.
This blog started out as a recollection of my trip around Europe in 2010-11. That trip was inspired by the thought of a reunion with my cousins. However, being the busy adults they were, in the midsts of discussions, they were forced to drop out. Now where did that leave me? Did I still want to go it alone, when that was the issue that had stopped me from travelling all those other times? Seeing their situation, I knew I didn't want to look back and wish that I had travelled when I had the time. So on that rare stroke of decisiveness, I bought my ticket, just in case I reconsidered (which I usually did). And that's all there is to it. This blog is to document the worldly travels of Hayden as he explores the unknown.

Firstly, I hope you got me a present with that extra money. =P Kidding!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I've heard about that Chinese artist, he handpainted each seed so I'd call it art. I don't remember the concept behind it though.
Wicked!! I loved Defying Gravity!!! Sooo soo good.
Good luck in France. The people there are just not nice. =P I hope it's all you want it to be though.
He actually didn't paint them. He got a whole batch of Chinese workers (and his family) to paint them lol.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, I've heard about the reputation of the French. We'll see how it goes. I do know not to move out of the way when I walk because they don't so we just bump into each other.
LOL what!?!??! Misleading newspaper article!!! Sweatshop-esque. Still, pretty cool. =P
ReplyDeleteSounds like France isn't too bad yet!
