Days 6 and 7: Last night was Halloween. I never realised how big it was in Madrid. Actually I never realised that Halloween existed outside of the USA. It definitely doesn't exist in Australia, and I tend to not open the doors to greedy kids who don't take the effort to dress up and are just there to get lollies for nothing. Good riddance to you. But here, I'm not sure if they trick-or-treat or not, but they all wander the streets as they normally do, just dressed up. Even the adults were dressed up. There's a very strong police presence in Madrid (or in Puerto de Sol which is the absolute centre of Spain and is where I'm staying). Lot of fake goods being sold on the streets, and every time a cop car approaches, they pull on a string and everything is scooped up conveniently into a bag and they're off running. Quite amusing really. But walking these streets are OK at night. I feel really safe, mainly cos there were just so many people around.
Found that churros place, and it was packed!! Managed to get my plate of churros and cup of steaming chocolate for only 3.70 euros. And it was absolutely delicious!! I was drinking the chocolate at the end just so I wouldn't be wasting it. Will definitely be heading back there tonight. It's hidden in a little alley off the main street but it's so famous that people know where to go.
Today, I went on the New Europe Madrid tour. It's free, but you usually tip at the end of the tour. I ended up tipping 10 euros because I didn't have a 5 lol. Next time, I'll definitely make sure I have a 5 note ready. The tour was really informative and the guide was really funny. Went for three hours around the city centre, stopping for a quick lunch of a sandwich, a beer and an apple for only 2 euros. They're running a tapas tour tomorrow night for 14 euros which I'm going to go on. Can't go to Spain without having tapas!!
HBL signing out from Madrid, Spain. Hasta la vista, baby!!
A simple blog detailing the exploits of a solo traveller trying to make the most of his time travelling the globe.
This blog started out as a recollection of my trip around Europe in 2010-11. That trip was inspired by the thought of a reunion with my cousins. However, being the busy adults they were, in the midsts of discussions, they were forced to drop out. Now where did that leave me? Did I still want to go it alone, when that was the issue that had stopped me from travelling all those other times? Seeing their situation, I knew I didn't want to look back and wish that I had travelled when I had the time. So on that rare stroke of decisiveness, I bought my ticket, just in case I reconsidered (which I usually did). And that's all there is to it. This blog is to document the worldly travels of Hayden as he explores the unknown.
Mission: To have the most amazing time seeing the world whilst I'm still young enough to not care so much about the future.

ReplyDeleteYou're inspiring me to travel solo! I just realised that you're overseas at the moment..!!
ReplyDeleteSkimming through some entries from the past, and reading through this one is very motivational!
Thanks Oracle!! I'm trying to figure out who you are since you apparently know me lol. Yeah I had some reservations about travelling solo but it gives you so much more freedom. As long as you keep in touch with people via email and facebook, it doesn't feel like you're alone at all.
