Day 10: As usual, I did some exploring of the city. Was planning on catching a bus down to London Tower and walking back but I couldn't find the bus stop that Van had told me to take, so I just kept walking. In the end, I found myself at Leicester Sqaure so I knew I had gone too far. Had a look at the half-price tickets available, and sadly Wicked wasn't on the board today. Guess I'll have to come back another day. From there, I continued down the street until I hit Trafalgar Square. Spent some time inside the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery admiring the artworks, before heading back out and admiring the beauty of Trafalgar Sqaure. Nelson's Column is impressive, as are the two large fountains beside it. In the distance, I saw turrets and the British flag flying so I knew that's where I needed to head.
Walked down the street, and saw this large crowd of people gathered outside a place with security as well. Was confused until I noticed the address. Downing Street. Was hoping that something would happen but the Prime Minister didn't come out, so I just moved on. Went down into the Underground to take a shortcut since these pedestrian lights take ages to change, and when I finally came up, I saw Big Ben right in front of me. Was mighty impressive. Took a self-portrait with it, which took 13 goes before I had one which I liked. Behind me was the Westminster Bridge over the River Thames, and the London Eye as well. Contemplating whether I should go on it since it does cost quite a bit. Turned the corner and found the famous Westminster Abbey. In the words of Joey Tribbiani, "hands down best abbey I've ever seen". Since it was getting late, decided to head back home and needed to find Oxford Street. Didn't realised that I had walked so far. Every time I see Oxford Street here, I think of Oxford Street back in Sydney. It's amusing. And I've also been noticing a lot of the Monopoly streets. Apparently there's a Monopoly pubcrawl which I think would be fun to do.
I've just bought a bus ticket from London to Edinburgh for £27.50. It's cheaper than train or plane but obviously longer. Although I'm catching it at midnight or so, so I can just sleep onboard and not have to waste a night of accommodation. At this point, it looks like Ireland may be cut from the route. Too much hassle to get to, and it's really expensive to fly to. Besides, I never really wanted to go to Ireland. I heard it was beautiful though. But I guess my main reason for wanting to go to Ireland was so I could say "Look!! I went to Ireland. That's another country!!". I don't mind not going there. It moves my schedule up a bit so I can spend a bit more time in London and Paris, which is actually a good thing. Anyway, we'll see what happens. But most likely scenario will be that Ireland is cut.
HBL signing out from London, UK. Good night guvnor!!
A simple blog detailing the exploits of a solo traveller trying to make the most of his time travelling the globe.
This blog started out as a recollection of my trip around Europe in 2010-11. That trip was inspired by the thought of a reunion with my cousins. However, being the busy adults they were, in the midsts of discussions, they were forced to drop out. Now where did that leave me? Did I still want to go it alone, when that was the issue that had stopped me from travelling all those other times? Seeing their situation, I knew I didn't want to look back and wish that I had travelled when I had the time. So on that rare stroke of decisiveness, I bought my ticket, just in case I reconsidered (which I usually did). And that's all there is to it. This blog is to document the worldly travels of Hayden as he explores the unknown.
Mission: To have the most amazing time seeing the world whilst I'm still young enough to not care so much about the future.
