This blog started out as a recollection of my trip around Europe in 2010-11. That trip was inspired by the thought of a reunion with my cousins. However, being the busy adults they were, in the midsts of discussions, they were forced to drop out. Now where did that leave me? Did I still want to go it alone, when that was the issue that had stopped me from travelling all those other times? Seeing their situation, I knew I didn't want to look back and wish that I had travelled when I had the time. So on that rare stroke of decisiveness, I bought my ticket, just in case I reconsidered (which I usually did). And that's all there is to it. This blog is to document the worldly travels of Hayden as he explores the unknown.

Mission: To have the most amazing time seeing the world whilst I'm still young enough to not care so much about the future.

Freezing cold...

It's been a few days since I last posted. Here's a quick summary of each day.

Day 12 - Went to a vintage market in London, and found an awesome Ben Sherman jacket for only £12!! I'm currently wearing it, and I'm so glad I have it cos it's so bloody cold. Then pretty much just bummed until I had to catch my overnight coach at 11:15pm. Heard an interesting conversation whilst I was in the bathroom at Maccas.

Guy1: Dude. Look at my piss. It's green. I've been taking special vitamins.
Guy2: Dude, I don't wanna look at your piss.
Guy1: Come on!! It's green!!
Guy2: Holy shit!! It's actually green. Like fluorescent green.
Guy1: Told you.

It was almost time to head to the coach station, so I decided to catch a bus to the coach station. Found the right bus to catch but couldn't find the right bus stop, so I ended up just following after the bus until I reached my destination. Apparently it was an express bus that didn't stop. Fail. Coach stopped at 3am to drop off people and pick up too. Two fucking annoying loud drunk Irish girls got on. I swear I have never wanted to kill anyone more than I did that night/morning. I was actually imagining ways to kill them. Seriously, if they had dropped dead right there and then, I would have been overjoyed!! But alas, they didn't. And no, I didn't kill them. But in my mind, they must have died at least 20 times by 20 different means.

Day 13 - Arrived in Edinburgh at 8am, and was so hungry that I went straight to Maccas. It seems like I always have to have fast food in every city that I go to. Freezing cold!! Never realised it would be so cold. I could not feel my fingers, nose and ears. And it was a sunny day too.

Walked to my hostel, but then got distracted by a huge crowd of tourists heading up a large stairway. Follwed them and found myself in front of Edinburgh Castle. It's amazing!! Saw the crown jewels too, which was the only place that had security. Understandable. Spent a good three hours there, before I realised I could catch the New Europe Edinburgh tour at 1pm. Quickly dropped off my bag at the hostel which turned out to be right at the bottom of the stairway that I got distracted at (could have saved myself the trouble of carrying my bag around the castle). Joined the tour and got an Australian guide this time. Bloody funny guy. Edinburgh's a very interesting city, and it's actually the most haunted city in the world. The stories about the hauntings and the graverobbing were so intriguing that I might actually consider going on a ghost tour. The tour took us to a graveyard which JK Rowling used to walk trying to find inspiration. Saw the grave of Tom Riddle (although spelt Thomas Riddel). Also saw the cafe where she wrote the books, which proudly displays a banner which says "Birthplace of Harry Potter".

Castle Rock is the 5th best hostel in the world. I can understand why. But I find it hard to talk to strangers even with the whole common areas and whatnot. So for me, I'm usually out all day exploring solo, and then once I get back. I'm pretty much in my room getting ready to sleep. But I don't really mind. I do have a dodgy key though which makes getting into the room a bit hard. Dinner was haggis. Obviously I'm in Scotland, so I have to try haggis. And it wasn't bad. It actually tasted OK. I don't really know how to describe it. I just know that I'm not against having it again.

Day 14 - Was raining today. But I was more prepared. I had my extra Ben Sherman jacket underneath my leather jacket, and had my scarf as well. Also had thermals under my jeans. With umbrella in hand, I was ready to head out. And it was good. I was a lot warmer than yesterday. But my face was still cold.

Since it was raining, decided to do indoor stuff so I checked out the Scottish National Museum. And then the Toy Museum (which was ridiculously boring). Also went inside St Giles Cathedral which was absolutely beautiful inside. Very gothic architecture. And then I did what everyone coming to Edinburgh needs to do. I had a deep-fried Mars Bar. Only £2 and a ten minute wait later, I was scoffing down the high-calorie snack. And I must say, I think I prefer it without the deep-frying and the batter doesn't really go with the chocolate. Explored the graveyard again, because apparently that's what the Scottish do. And then went up Calton Hill and enjoyed the view of Edinburgh.

I'm now back at the hostel deciding whether I should go on the ghost tour or not. They do not guarantee my mental or physical safety and people who've been on the tours have had some supernatural injuries which I am not keen on. We'll see. It's currently raining so maybe that's a sign not to lol.

HBL signing out from Edinburgh, UK. Cheerio lassie!!
