This blog started out as a recollection of my trip around Europe in 2010-11. That trip was inspired by the thought of a reunion with my cousins. However, being the busy adults they were, in the midsts of discussions, they were forced to drop out. Now where did that leave me? Did I still want to go it alone, when that was the issue that had stopped me from travelling all those other times? Seeing their situation, I knew I didn't want to look back and wish that I had travelled when I had the time. So on that rare stroke of decisiveness, I bought my ticket, just in case I reconsidered (which I usually did). And that's all there is to it. This blog is to document the worldly travels of Hayden as he explores the unknown.

Mission: To have the most amazing time seeing the world whilst I'm still young enough to not care so much about the future.

Welcome to 2011...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

It's now 2pm Swiss time on Janauary 1st, which would be the end of the first day in Sydney. Only just got up an hour ago, after quite a late night. Ended up spending NYE as a bartender at my uncle's and aunt's restaurant last night. It was so fast-paced. I've never worked in such an environment. I'll certainly have a bit more patience next time I eat at a busy restaurant lol. I did however have easy access to the alcohol, plus a certain alcoholic holiday punch that we had made for our guests. It was made with lychee juice, orange juice, Campari and Cointreu and tasted absolutely amazing. And since it was right there in front of me, I ended drinking around two litres of that throughout the night lol. I also learnt how to pour beer from a tap (and also how to drink from the tap lol). As midnight approached, we simply put on the radio since we were still in the process of closing up the restaurant. Countdown in German!! Once midnight struck, champagne was flowing, and it was just a more relaxed atmosphere than the hectic pace earlier on in the night when the restaurant was packed. Fireworks were going off outside, but they were nowhere near as good as the ones in Sydney lol. Here's a short clip of the fireworks and my thoughts at the start of the new year on Facebook. After I could drink no more champagne, I ended up heading out for more drinks at a nearby bar with some of the people from the restaurant. I guess that this year's start was a bit quieter than what I would have liked (plus their fireworks are nothing compared to Sydney's), but I guess the fact that I'm in Europe has to count for something lol.

Anyways, my 2010 can be summarised in three words: thesis, stress, Eurotrip. Those were the first three words that came to mind, and yet they were all predominantly in the latter half of the year. My thesis took up so much of my life this year (well maybe more those last few months), but the stress was straight from the beginning. Eurotrip kinda added to that stress, but I don't regret anything that's happened on this trip, and it will certainly be something I'll remember forever. Thinking back to the first half of the year, I have very happy memories, namely Yellow Shirts and my 21st birthday cruise. I guess the workload really got to me in the second half of the year lol. Hoping 2011 doesn't turn out as stressful as 2010, but even if it does, I'll be prepared.

As for New Year's resolution, I've had a long hard think about this, since it's always hard coming up with one that you can keep. After much deliberation, I've decided that I'm going to be more independent (NO THIS DOES NOT MEAN I'M MOVING OUT). Doing Europe alone has shown me that I am able to take care of myself (to an extent lol). To be honest, I'm not even sure what this resoution entails, but it sounds good. Nevertheless, I'll try and be more independent in 2011, and we'll see where that leads me.

To all my family and friends back home, I miss you all heaps, and I'll be home soon!! Only 10 days til I fly out!! To all the people I met whilst travelling around Europe, you all made my experience a lot more fun (especially the crew in Bruges), and I won't ever forget it. Like I said, if you're ever in Sydney, let me know - we'll party it up like we did in Europe!!

Once again, wishing you all a happy new year, and hoping that you all take advantage of all the opportunities that 2011 offers. Will be catching up with all of you once I get back when I can finally have extended periods of social contact lol. But wait, does this work against my resolution of being more independent lol? Should I be more independent and not have to rely so much on my friends lol? Hahaha screw that, I haven't seen you guys in three months...drinks on me when I'm back!!

HBL signing out from Emmenbrücke, Switzerland. WELCOME TO 2011!! CHEERS!!

PS. Maccas is bloody expensive here (just like everything in Switzerland). A large Big Mac meal costs the equivalent of $13AUD. Absolutely ridiculous!!
