This blog started out as a recollection of my trip around Europe in 2010-11. That trip was inspired by the thought of a reunion with my cousins. However, being the busy adults they were, in the midsts of discussions, they were forced to drop out. Now where did that leave me? Did I still want to go it alone, when that was the issue that had stopped me from travelling all those other times? Seeing their situation, I knew I didn't want to look back and wish that I had travelled when I had the time. So on that rare stroke of decisiveness, I bought my ticket, just in case I reconsidered (which I usually did). And that's all there is to it. This blog is to document the worldly travels of Hayden as he explores the unknown.

Mission: To have the most amazing time seeing the world whilst I'm still young enough to not care so much about the future.

Hayden did Europe...

I've been back home for a few days now. So good to be home. Finding it difficult to cope with the heat right now, but I'll soon adjust hopefully. My suitcase remains unpacked and in the living room. I'm just too lazy lol. It's still hard to believe that I did Europe. I can't believe three months has gone by. It seems like only yesterday I was trying to get everything ready for my Eurotrip, whilst doing my thesis. And now, I've travelled Europe. Amazing. Will definitely be heading back to Europe when I have money and time. Three months is not enough, and I didn't even see half of Europe. So much more to see!!

Anyways, my last few days in Switzerland were quite uneventful, and it was more just packing and preparing myself for the long trip home lol. Managed to get my checked luggage in at 26kg and my carry on at 13kg. Didn't get charged for all those extra kilos though which was awesome. I was ridiculously early for my flight so I spent most of my time at the Burger King watching a darts tournament on Foxtel. Mighty engaging. My flight out of Zurich was delayed by 40 minutes due to snow. Managed to get two seats to myself, which although wasn't large enough to stretch out comfortably, was definitely better than having only one seat. Managed to watch Social Network, Inception and Despicable Me on that 11 hours flight from Zurich to Seoul. What blew my mind was that the inflight entertainment system had a USB port. Sadly I didn't have anything to plug into that. Had a three hour layover in Seoul which was spent just walking around and eating at the KFC, before boarding a full flight. I spent 10 hours on that flight from Seoul to Sydney and it so uncomfortable. For some reason, it felt like those seats were smaller than the ones I've sat in before (I've had a different type of plane each time). Didn't manage to get much sleep (only managed to get about two hours total for both flights). As we neared Sydney, I could feel my excitement increasing. I was so close to home!! When we finally landed at 7am, I just couldn't help grinning (I'm sure I looked really weird lol). Getting through customs was a breeze, and I was even able to get through quarantine easily since a guard let me through the express exit when I told him that the only food I was carrying was 10kg of chocolate. He gave me a weird look, but alas, I was able to get through quarantine without even having to have my bags scanned.

Leaving the airport, I was hit with an intense heat. I was dying. Later I found out it was 24 degrees. Fail. My tolerance of the heat was completely gone thanks to Europe. My tolerance of the cold that I had built up over three months was no longer useful. Entering my house for the first time in three months was an odd feeling. It felt foreign and familiar at the same time. Dumped all my luggage, had a shower, and was out the door off to my aunt's place for some food lol. It felt so good to be able to drive again. Also surprising that I wasn't tired given how little sleep I had had, but I guess maybe I was running on adrenaline and excitement lol. Either way, I probably wouldn't have allowed myself to sleep given that I needed to readjust my sleeping patterns. Pretty much just spent the rest of the day catching up with my cousins.

Next day was TD1 (ie. Yellow Shirts training). Quite a long day, but it was nice to catch up with a lot of familiar people, as well as getting to know those in my double squad. Also found out that I was a part of Alan's squad of Amazonians. Awesome. That day was pretty much taken up by Yellow Shirts stuff, and I was absolutely exhausted by the end of the day.

Went to the city last night to celebrate Reema's birthday. Caught up with most of the Mutinous Mermaids last night which was great. Too bad that I had to drive, because the bar tab was quite generous, and was still going when I left quite late. I had an amazing time there, and it was a shame that I had to leave for another party. Headed off to Deb's party afterwards at around 1am, and caught up some of the Hurlstones. It was annoying that I had already had my quota of drinks for the night at Reema's, but I guess there's always next time lol. Anyways it was a great night out, and also my first one since I've been back. It feels so good to be home lol.

Right now, I'm just trying to organise heaps of catch-up sessions with different people/groups so my week is quite full. Not sure if I have time to plan a birthday. It would be very unlike me to not do something but I'm just not sure if I have time to organise anything, nor if I can find a free day to do have the celebration. At least I'll have a b'day celebration at YS camp, but it would be nice to be able to so something with everyone else as well. Oh well, we'll see what happens.

In terms of this blog, I now realise that the name "Hayden Does Europe" no longer applies. I already did Europe, and now the blog posts will be about other things now. Contemplating changing the name but at the moment, not sure what to change it to. And given that I'm now home with not as many interesting things happening, I also think I won't be posting so frequently, but we'll see how that goes. Anyways, I think that's all for now.
