Explored Lucerne today. It is such a beautiful place. And Switzerland is really a low-key place. Not much hustle and bustle even in the main tourist areas. Definitely not like Sydney. I really like the calmness of the place. Went to see the main tourist attractions, which included a giant stone lion carved out in a rock-face, a museum about the history of the area called the Glacier Gardens, and a very old wooden bridge (that was partially burnt down, but rebuilt).
The stone lion was interesting. Big tourist thing. Lots of Asian tourists there so I didn't manage to get a photo standing in front of it. The Glacier Gardens was quite interesting, mainly because I like museums. It was interesting to see how the glaciers are all melting away because of global warming, and also see the history of the place and how people used to live. The bridge was awesome in terms of its architecture. Also loved its surrounding buildings. It was a fun day exploring, and I finally felt like a tourist, what with my taking photos of every building lol. Also ended up taking photos of an awesome cafe/bakery which had special alcohol-filled chocolates (16 for around $35AUD) and a cheese shop which was filled with so many different types of cheese. I'm now looking forward even more to my cheese tour in France.
Also met up with my aunt who also lives in Switzerland, and she said she might be free on the weekend. So there might be the possibility of us heading to the Prague in the Czech Republic this weekend. Not confirmed yet, but if it goes ahead, I'm sure it'll be awesome. I've heard that it's a very beautiful city so I'll be taking lots of photos. One thing I've noticed (not sure if it's limited to Switzerland or not) is that the architecture is awesome. I really like the way the old style buildings are still around. They really add to the culture of the area. And not to mention that the scenery is awesome. From my uncle's house, you can see the mountains and their snow-capped peaks. Will hopefully be up there soon lol.
I have also noticed that the people of Switzerland are very friendly. They'll just randomly jump into other peoples' conversations or even just strike up conversations with randoms. It's odd, especially since I'm not used to seeing this in Sydney, and since it's considered weird to do so. Plus, I guess I'm just an overly suspicious guy and I question the motive of a random wanting to talk to me. Don't think I'll be letting my guard down though, especially since I'll be travelling solo for most of the time through Europe.
I am now about to enjoy a kebab for dinner. We'll see how nice a kebab in Switzerland is. I feel the need to suddenly go drink a few beers before I eat it lol. Also just found out from my cousin that the drinking age is 16 over here and that the driving age is 18!! But I guess that's understandable given that they're neighbours to Germany and its Oktoberfest lol.
HBL signing out from Lucerne, Switzerland. Kebab time!!
A simple blog detailing the exploits of a solo traveller trying to make the most of his time travelling the globe.
This blog started out as a recollection of my trip around Europe in 2010-11. That trip was inspired by the thought of a reunion with my cousins. However, being the busy adults they were, in the midsts of discussions, they were forced to drop out. Now where did that leave me? Did I still want to go it alone, when that was the issue that had stopped me from travelling all those other times? Seeing their situation, I knew I didn't want to look back and wish that I had travelled when I had the time. So on that rare stroke of decisiveness, I bought my ticket, just in case I reconsidered (which I usually did). And that's all there is to it. This blog is to document the worldly travels of Hayden as he explores the unknown.
